The Engineering Process

The engineering procedure is a sequence of steps used by engineers, developers and scientists to create a new product or solution. These products or solutions may be used in daily life to solve problems experienced by consumers or users.

The process begins with students defining a problem, researching the topic and identifying the requirements that need to be met. Then, they brainstorm ideas and consider what other people have done to solve a similar problem.

They then choose the best solution from their list and build a working prototype. This step shows the students that they’ve accomplished a lot, and they can see how their idea becomes a real solution.

After building their prototypes, students test them to see if the work as expected. The prototypes can be used to improve their designs.

The designers will likely have to go through many prototypes until they find a design that is both functional and complete. This iterative method teaches designers that they should never stop trying to improve the design.

Your students can use the engineering process throughout their lives, regardless of whether they become engineers. They can apply the skills they learn to any project, from building skyscrapers to making sneakers.
